NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Here's a recap of the varsity games from last week that you might have missed:
Football (1-1): Algonquin took a tough loss to Wachusett on Saturday, 35–0. While both teams committed excessive penalties and turnovers, the Mountaineers eventually found their stride and scored five touchdowns.
Soccer (Boys: 2–0–1; Girls: 2–0–1): Despite the delays to their seasons, both teams have made strong starts. The boys tied with Groton-Dunstable on Tuesday, 1–1, but shut out Quabbin on Thursday, 4–0, and Hudson on Saturday, 5–0. Meanwhile, the girls beat Groton-Dunstable on Tuesday, 5–1, and Quabbin on Thursday, 2–0. They tied Hudson on Saturday in a scoreless game.
Field Hockey (2-2): The team's loss to Lunenberg on Monday was followed by a 2–0 win against Westborough on Wednesday. Algonquin's Taylor O'Connell scored both goals. Friday, the team fell to Nashoba despite nine saves by Algonquin's Kate Sears. The Chieftans snuck a goal by with 12:32 left for the win.
Girls Volleyball (4–0): This week, the girls extended their winning streak to four with 3-0 victories over Milford, North Middlesex and Marlborough. Algonquin's Hannah Lindgren had a particularly good day defensively Tuesday with 18 digs.
Cross Country (Boys: 1–1; Girls: 1–1): Both the boys and girls teams fared well against Fitchburg on Tuesday, winning 38–23 and 50–15, respectively. Algonquin senior captain Greg Palken finished first for the boys with a time of 16:28. For the girls, Tomahawk Kyra Shreeve finished first with a time of 21:02.
Golf (4–1): The golf team came out ahead this week, winning two and losing one. They beat Fitchburg on Tuesday, 227–203, and Wachusett on Thursday, 209–201. Matches don't get any closer than the one against North Middlesex on Wednesday, which the Tomahawks lost, 201–200.
