NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Take a look at how Algonquin's varsity sports teams did this past week.
Basketball (Boys: 6-0; Girls: 6-1 ): The boys picked up their sixth-straight win Friday (though it could have been their seventh had the referees shown up to Wednesday's game). They beat Shrewsbury, 59-48. Senior Brandon Lukoff scored 20 points while sophomore A.J. Brodeur had 14 rebounds and five blocks. Meanwhile, the girls picked up a win against Shrewsbury Friday, 58-27. Amanda Murphy scored 24 points for the Tomahawks, while Sarah Merchant added nine.
Ice Hockey (Boys: 3-2-1; Girls: 2-3): The boys beat Hudson Tuesday, 5-2, in the consolation game of the MetroWest Cup. Brody Gardner and Matt Tozeski each scored two goals. The boys lost Saturday to Wachusett, 4-2, despite Connor Henry making 30 saves for Algonquin. Struggling to revive their season, the girls earned a win Wednesday against Auburn, 6-3. They scored three goals within the first three minutes of the of the second period to take a commanding lead. Senior Andrea Fahey scored two while sophomore Jen Manning added another.
Swimming (7-0): The swim team continued its undefeated run with two more wins last week. It beat Gardner Wednesday, 82-66. Sophomore Drew Beland won the 50-meter freestyle with a school-record time of 23.50. The team beat Wachusett Friday, 94-74. Beland won the 200- and 500-meter freestyles to lift the Tomahawks to victory.
Gymnastics (3-0): Algonquin beat Shrewsbury and Hudson Saturday. It beat Shrewsbury, 141.850-137.350, and Hudson, 141.850-130.950.
Indoor Track: Algonquin lost to Wachusett at Thursday's track meet. The boys lost, 57-34, while the girls lost, 59-32.
