Algonquin Sports Roundup: Field Hockey Earns Wins

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Here's a recap of the varsity games from last week that you may have missed:

Football (1–5): The Tomahawks went into halftime on Friday with a 13–6 lead over Leominster (4–2). The Blue Devils came back strong, however, with four touchdowns to win, 32–13.

Soccer (Boys: 9–1–2; Girls: 10–0–3): The boys picked up three wins this week. Algonquin beat Wachusett (5–4–1) on Tuesday, 1–0. Tomahawk Danny Keller scored the game's only goal. They beat Shrewsbury (5–6) on Thursday, qualifying for the playoffs for the 20th straight year. They beat Nipmuc (2–8–2) on Saturday, 3–1.

The girls tied two games and won another this week. They tied Wachusett (4–5–3) on Tuesday and Shrewsbury (5–2–3) on Thursday. They beat Nipmuc (9–2–1). Tomahawk Michaela Horne scored on a penalty kick to give Algonquin the win.

Field Hockey (7–4–1): Algonquin picked up three wins this week. The team beat Quabbin (5–5–3) on Tuesday, 2–0, and Wachusett (6–4–1) on Thursday, 1–0. Algonquin goalie Kate Sears made two saves to earn the team's sixth shutout of the season. The Tomahawks beat Shrewsbury (12–2) on Friday, 2–1. Taylor Long scored two second-half goals to give Algonquin the win.

Girls Volleyball (12–2): Algonquin picked up three wins this week, beating Marlborough (6–6) on Tuesday, Groton-Dunstable (5–5) on Wednesday and Wachusett (8–5) on Friday. All games were won 3–0.

Cross Country (Boys: 3–3; Girls: 4–2): Both teams lost their races this week. The boys fell to Wachusett (5–1) on Tuesday, 39–20. Algonquin's Greg Palken won the 3.1 mile race with a time of 17:19, but the next four finishers were from Wachusett. The girls fell to Wachusett (6–0) on Tuesday, 45–17. Algonquin's Megan Walsh finished fourth with a time of 21:14.

In addition, the boys finished fourth overall at the Cross Country Invitational at Wachusett Regional on Saturday with an average time of 17:54.40 for the 5K race. Meanwhile, the girls finished fifth overall at the Cross Country Invitational at Quabbin Regional on Saturday with an average time of 22:33.09 for the 2.92 mile run. 

Golf (9–5): The team picked up two wins and a loss this week. It beat Leominster (4–12) on Tuesday, 220–212, and again on Thursday, 226–209. The team lost to Shrewsbury (13–2) on Friday, 204–197. Tyler Hatton and Matt O'Donnell both scored 37 for Algonquin.
