NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Here's a look at how the Algonquin Regional High School varsity sports teams did during the week of Feb. 15-21.
Basketball: Boys: 19-1, Girls: 17-3. The boys beat St. John's Feb. 21 in the biggest nail-biter of the season, 59-58. The Tomahawks won in overtime when Brad Canova scored with 18.6 seconds remaining. A.J. Brodeur then stepped in to block a shot at the buzzer to keep Algonquin on top.
Meanwhile, the girls had a great run through the Westborough Invitational Tournament this week. They beat Franklin in the first round, 58-46, Feb. 17. Amanda Murphy scored 23 points while teammate Lucy LeBlond picked up 19. On Feb. 19, the Tomahawks beat Westborough on their own court, 54-29.
Ice Hockey: Boys: 8-9-3, Girls: 4-10-3. The boys tied St. Bernard's Feb. 15 when Tomahawk Jack Mullin scored the tying goal with less than five minutes to play. They then beat Westborough, 3-2, Feb. 16 with Matt Tozeski scoring twice and goalie Connor henry making 24 saves. However, the team lost its remaining two games this week. Auburn beat them, 5-1, Feb. 18 while Shrewsbury beat them, 5-4, Feb. 20.
The girls tied with Gardner, 1-1, Feb. 15 when Jennifer Manning scored the tying goal in the third period for the Tomahawks. They beat Belmont, 7-3, Feb. 18 with Manning earning a hat trick. The team lost to Cathedral, 4-3, Feb. 20.
