Algonquin Sports Roundup: Boys Basketball Stays Strong

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Here's a quick look at how Algonquin's varsity sports teams did during the week of Feb 1-7.

Basketball (Boys: 16-1, Girls: 13-3): The boys beat North Middlesex on Feb. 1, 59-33. They beat Fitchburg in a nail-biter on Feb. 5, 78-76, with sophomore A.J. Brodeur scoring a game-high 27 points. Finally, the Tomahawks beat Leominster on Feb. 7, 52-46.

The girls beat North Middlesex on Feb. 1, 55-27. They beat Fitchburg on Feb. 5, 49-19. Finally, they beat Leominster on Feb. 7, 53-38. Amanda Murphy scored 21 points, while Dorian McMenemy added 16.

Ice Hockey (Boys: 6-7-2, Girls: 2-7-2): The boys beat Leominster on Feb. 2, 2-0. They lost to Auburn on Feb. 5, 3-1. They beat Hudson on Feb. 6, 6-4. Brody Gardner scored twice for the Tomahawks while Brian Ward had a goal and an assist.

The girls tied their game against Franklin on Feb. 6, 4-4. Andrea Fahey scored the tying goal for the Tomahawks with 24 seconds left.

Wrestling (14-11): Algonquin lost to St. John's on Feb. 2, 48-21.

Gymnastics (14-1): Algonquin beat Marlborough on Feb. 2, 145.050-129.200. On Feb. 5, they beat Acton-Boxborough, 148.700-138.600 and Westford, 148.700-142. Senior Alissa Wood won the bars (9.5), floor (9.7) and overall (38.4) to lead the Tomahawks.
