NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Northborough-Southborough Schools will be closed Monday as the area prepares for Hurricane Sandy.

Superintendent of Schools Charles Gobron canceled classes as the powerful storm blitzes its way up the East Coast.

Gobron was among several school leaders in the area to make the call after predictions for Hurricane Sandy indicated it would begin the most serious part of its assault on the Central Mass. area in the early afternoon -- right around the time schools would be ending for the day.

The National Weather Service said Central Massachusetts can expect 2 to 5 inches of rain but that there will be sustaining winds of 20 to 40 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph for a period of 12 to 18 hours.

The Daily Voice, available on computer, tablet and smartphone, will be updating with the latest local information throughout the storm. Have cancellations or storm damage photos? Email bmatthew@dailyvoice.com.
