SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Southborough firefighters rescued two dogs that fell through river ice near Main Street on Sunday evening.

The two golden retrievers were out for a walk with their owner at around 5 p.m. when they ran off onto the frozen aqueduct that flows into the Sudbury Reservoir, firefighters said.

"They were getting tired," Capt. Mark Sadowski said. "They were having a difficult time keeping their head above water."

Rescuers ventured out on the ice to pull the dogs out of the water. They were returned to the owner, who lives in town.

"They were cold," Sadowski said. "They had been in for about 18 to 20 minutes."

He added that the dogs did not appear to suffer any permanent injuries.
