SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Be on the lookout for a stormy night Tuesday with high winds.

Shrewsbury Weather Specialist James Arnold said showers will begin during the afternoon Tuesday and become more numerous and heavier during the night, with a chance of a few strong thunderstorms. Storm conditions may extend into early Wednesday morning.

Arnold said that he doesn't expect storms to become severe, but noted that southwest wind gusts may be as much as 55 mph overnight. Arnold said to expect between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain where thunderstorms occur. Weather conditions should calm down later Wednesday morning.

"This could bring large tree limbs down and with soggy ground from the expected heavy rain, some trees could be toppled," Arnold stated in an alert. "Should ths happen, scattered power outages could occur."

The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 mph, or gusting between 46 and 57 mph.

According to the NWS, rain and thunderstorms may occur before 10 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a slight chance of rain between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with an 80 percent chance of precipitation.

Chris L.:

Has anyone noticed that over the past year or two the NWS has become increasingly alarmist?

By drumming up every heavy rainfall or windstorm, the NWS is able to manufacture and maintain a heightened level of fear to the people who have no choice but to take every warning seriously.

Are they attempting to:
1- Expand government by inflating their relevance?
2- Attribute absolutely everything to global warming?
3- Provide stimulus to grocery stores and flashlight manufacturers?
4- Make people afraid of everything, thus more dependant and easilly manipulated?
5- Just be super cautious after the Brimfield/Springfield tornadoes, (which I think were a pretty uncommon event).

It's obviously a conspiracy, right? ;)

Thanks. This is good info for those of us who have to worry about trees falling on our vehicles or homes because some people refuse to take care of their breaking, falling trees.
