SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Keeping young children occupied during poor winter weather can be difficult. The Southborough Recreation Department plans to help with a new program for kids up to age 6.

"Free Play" days at 21 Highland St. will offer kids the chance to exercise their motor skills with obstacle courses, softball and ever-changing tabletop activities.

"Basically, what we wanted to do was try to find developmentally appropriate activities for kids, especially now during the winter months," Community Events Coordinator Melissa Shields said.

A book corner also will be available for children who prefer to read. In addition, special events are being planned, including parties for Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day.

"Free Play" days will be from 10 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Thursday. Children must be accompanied by a parent. Snacks will be provided.

Parents who wish to contact Shields with suggestions may do so at melissa_shields@yahoo.com
