SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Like many small business owners, Anthony Speranzella's goal is to compete with increasing pressure from large chain establishments.

With Sperry's Country Market, which opened Wednesday at 205 Turnpike Rd. (Route 9) in Southborough, Speranzella hopes to win customers by creating a unique atmosphere. Enter the store and the wood-panel walls are covered in classic signs for soft drinks and groceries. Shelves near the back even support old-fashioned ice boxes, decorations for which Speranzella scoured the Internet.

"Already, everyone's been saying there's a country market feel," Speranzella said. "We don't want to be known as a convenience store."

The store is Speranzella's fourth — he owns two liquor stores in Marlborough and one in Hudson — but this one sets itself apart, he said, by offering a selection of food, wine and beer.

"Somebody once told me that when you go into a convenience store, you want to finish the meal," he said, adding that customers will be able to find a better selection of food and ingredients than they would elsewhere.

Many of these items will be instantly recognizable to those who shop in the area. Speranzella will sell meat from Kennedy's Market in Marlborough, brownies from Yummy Mummy in Southborough and ice cream from Trombetta's Farm in Northborough and Marlborough.

"We're trying to get everybody local," he said

Sperry's Country Market is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
